Having made its way to North America after having originated in the markets of the Pacific Rim, Old Parr Superior 18 YO has certainly not traveled in vain. This trek helps the Scotch live up to the 2007 award it received from the Whisky Bible: World Whisky of the Year. Fears that it was simply an overhyped example of ordinary scotch proved to erroneous, from the first aromas that bring about the peat and also find time for such things as lavender and sawgrass. In its final stages, fruit on the cusp of ripening and a sampling of vanilla make an impact on the sampler's nose. That peat remains once this Scotch hits the palate, with the surrounding contributions of spice and vanilla joining in. An overall smoky appeal contrasts with sweeter offerings of caramel and honey, and it's that sweetness arriving at the finish in the form of chocolate.
