Ketel 1 ranks as one of the top vodka producers of all time, but few realize that it's also one of the oldest distillers as well. Founded in 1691, the company remains owned and operated by the same family that originally started it. Though times change, that family hopes to remind drinkers of the past with its Ketel 1 Originale Graanjenever. Ketel 1 Originale Graanjenever uses a similar recipe and distilling process as some of its earliest products did. Made from corn, wheat and rye, it had a deeper flavor with a malty aftertaste, which is similar to the way gin once tasted. After finishing the distillation, the manufacturer pours the liquid into large oak barrels from France and ages the gin for a full year before bottling and selling it. The richness of that oak pairs nicely with the malty notes to create a gin that is full of flavor.
