While Ketel 1 Vodka has made a big splash as a "new" vodka in the marketplace in recent years, it is actually produced at a distillery founded in the 1600s in the Netherlands. That distillery originally opened to produce jenever, gin's less-refined ancestor. Ketel 1 Originale Graanjenever starts as wheat, corn and rye. Those ingredients go through Ketel 1's proprietary distillation process and become a base spirit that is like unrefined gin. This spirit is then aged in oak barrels for 12 months. Between the starter ingredients and those 12 months of aging in wood, Ketel 1 Originale Graanjenever develops a flavor spectrum that makes it very different from modern gin. This is a great spirit to use to breathe new life into a stale gin cocktail, but it also can be enjoyed straight. As long as you consume it responsibly, you will be happy with Ketel 1 Originale Graanjenever.
