The Ketel 1 brand is best known for vodka, but Ketel 1 also makes a fine Jenever Gin not on the radar of many gin drinkers. Graanjenever is a throwback to gins of days past, which were grain spirit-based rather than using the neutral grain spirit common with vodka and many popular gins today. This imparts an almost beer-like, grain-heavy flavor with notes of juniper and a distinct smokiness from the French oak barrels in which it is aged for at least 1 year. The Nolet Distillery, founded in Holland by the Nolet family in 1691 and still found in its original city of Schiedam, produces Ketel 1 gins and vodkas and several other fine spirits. Ketel 1 Graanjenever retails for around $50 per bottle and has an alcohol content on the lighter side in this class of spirits at 70.0 proof.
