In 1755, Louis XV signed a founding charter granting the Gautier family a Royal Warrant to produce cognac, a brandy of distinct character made almost exclusively with Ugni Blanc white grapes and named after the French town of Cognac. In order to meet cognac qualifications, production must adhere to strict legalities and Cognac Gautier is exceptional. The Gautier family has preserved their traditional expertise since the installation of its winery on the Aigre watermill on the Osme River.
